  We conducted a lab experiment on water properties. Water is everywhere, each molecule of water is made up of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atoms  Water is polar because the oxygen molecule has a slightly negative charge and the hydrogen molecule has a slightly negative charge.  In one of the experiments we conducted it was about capillary action we used a beaker of blue water, an empty beaker, paper towel, narrow and wide drinking straws a beaker of green water than we Place the beaker of blue-colored water beside the empty beaker and made a simple paper towel bridge to connect the beakers. The results were the colored water moved    from the first beaker to the other

Saturated & Unsaturated Fatts

Saturated   It has no double bonds (C=C) in the fatty acids.  The structure has the maximum number of hydrogens.  It has long straight chains  It has solid at room temperature  Contribute to cardiovascular disease as they can increase the bad cholesterol LDL. Found in many animal products such as butter, cheese, whole milk, ice cream, cream and fatty meats. Unsaturated  It has one double bond (C=C) in the fatty acids. The structure has fewer hydrogens. It has bent chains. It is liquid at room temperature. Healthier than saturated fats because they can help lower blood cholesterol unless they are trans fats in that case it is not healthy. It is found in avocados peanut butter, nuts, seeds and vegetable oils such as olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, sesame oil and sunflower oil.

Cholesterol

Difference between good and bad cholesterol: Cholesterol belongs to the steroid family of lipid. Cholesterol is the most abundant steroid in the body. The cholesterol in your blood comes from two sources: the foods you eat like meat and dairy products and your liver. Your liver makes all the cholesterol your body needs. HDL is the good cholesterol and it’s job is to help keep your arteries clear and free of plaques LDL is the bad cholesterol and it forms plaques in your arteries causing them to harden and narrow 

Survey

 We conducted a survey and asked teens about their diet and if their diets are healthy or unhealthy  These are our questions and the responses we got:
  Carbohydrates   What is carbohydrates? It is a biomolecule consisting of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms.  What is the importance of carbohydrates in your diet? Any food that has a high carbohydrates are important part of a healthy diet. What are the benefits of carbohydrates? They provide your body with glucose that is converted to energy used to support bodily functions and physical activity.  What are the characteristics of carbohydrates? They contain elements of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and that their combustion will yield carbon dioxide plus one or more molecules of water. What are the benefits of carbohydrate? It is one of the main nutrients in our diet.

Lipids

Phosphorus, nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen are occasionally found in lipids, which are primarily made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. The monomers of lipids are fatty acids and glycerol. Because lipids often contain nonpolar molecules (i.e., bonds between carbon and hydrogen atoms are not polar), they are hydrophobic and insoluble in water Types Of Lipids 1. Triglycerides (Fats- oils)  2. Phospholipids (phosphatidic acid) 3. Steroids (hydrocortisone-prednisone) 4. Waxes (beeswax) Why do we need to eat lipids? They are important in the diet as energy sources and as sources of essential fatty acids and fat soluble vitamins, which tend to associate with fats. How much lipids should we eat daily? No more than 35%  Lipids functions 1.Lipids can be used as long-term energy storage. 2. Lipids are the main component of the cell membrane. 3. Lipids act as waterproof coverings. 4. Lipids act as thermal insulators. 5. Steroids, such as hormones, serve as chemical messengers
